Spelling out loud- How to pronounce letters of the alphabet
You are at a conference and somebody asks you for you email address. No problem you think- but then they ask you to spell your name or your company name and suddenly you are not so sure.
How do I say 'y'?
or you get stuck with 'a' , 'e', 'i' as in your language they are the other way around - this is certainly true for Spanish and German speakers.
Everybody can repeat the alphabet when they start with 'A' and finish with 'Z'. However, when they have to say the letters out loud, for example giving their name for a reservation or giving someone an address, nearly everybody struggles with certain letters.
Here is a list of the letters that often cause people problems and some suggestions to help remember them:
a = ay (pay, day)
e= ee (see)
g = gee
i= think ipad
j = jay, think James
q= queue
r = are
u = you
v = vee
w = double you
x = ex
y = why
z = zed (British English) zee (American English)
To practice this, listen to these audio files. I say a simple word and then you need to spell it out loud, not write it down. (Remember it is not to test your spelling, it is to test if you can say the letters!) After a short pause, I will spell the word and you can compare to see if you got it correct.
